Make sure no judge is ever required to lock you up in accordance with draconian mandatory minimum sentence laws. Learn to Flex Your Rights. And before they start driving and/or going to concerts and parties, please show this video (and other Flex Your Rights videos) to your children.

Eight Days of Gratitude: FAMM

Jim Gray was a Superior Court judge in Orange County, California. You don't want to argue with him about whether mass incarceration for nonviolent drug offenses is a good idea. You'll lose. This is part of the SafeKeepers video series produced by the Beyond Bars campaign and Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP).

For my 6th day of gratitude, on this most family-est of weekends, I'm thankful for Families Against Mandatory Minimums (FAMM) and other individuals and organizations working to minimize the destruction of the War on Drugs.

Mandatory minimum sentences separate innocent children from their non-violent fathers (and mothers) for decades and are used to strong-arm the wrongfully accused into accepting plea bargains. As former drug warrior, federal prosecutor, Superior Court Judge, JAG, and VP candidate Judge Jim Gray says of mandatory minimums:

"Our system is not supposed to be so enormously coercive to push people into abandoning their rights to a jury trial, and the mandatory minimum sentences get that to happen. I think it’s simply wrong, fundamentally unfair, fundamentally unjust under our system, and I think they should be changed.

Eight Days of Gratitude: IJ

Did you know that the Institute for Justice tangled with Donald Trump in the 1990s when he was working with a government agency to take away a widow's home through eminent domain for his private gain? http://www.ij.org/1002

On this Thanksgivukkah, I'm lighting a candle for my friends at the Institute for Justice (IJ), a public interest law firm which fights for the little guy. For example?

On the day before Thanksgiving, the government agency notified Vera that she must vacate her home within 90 days or the sheriff would remove her.

"The government was going to take my home from me to give to [Donald] Trump so he could expand his casino. Where is the justice in that? We're not in another country where anyone can come in and say, ‘We want your home. Get out!' This is America. My husband fought in the war and worked to make sure I would have a roof over my head, and they want to take it from me? I couldn't understand what the government was doing.

"Without the Institute for Justice, I didn't have any chance to keep my house. The Institute for Justice works to help the little people like me. Thanks to the Institute for Justice, I was able to fight, and here I am today--in my own home."

Vera Coking was one of IJ's early clients and they've been helping homeowners and entrepreneurs keep their homes and businesses ever since.

Eight Days of Gratitude: PERC

"Conflict in priorities often is not only an environmental conflict. Often, it is an economic conflict, too -- rooted in differing economic circumstances." David Schmidtz teaches philosophy and economics at the University of Arizona. He has studied resource management in parts of Africa where subsistence farmers struggle to co-exist with the wildlife who destroy their crops.

Environmental conflict is often rooted in differing economic circumstances. The Property and Environment Research Center (PERC) explores peaceful and creative ways to solve environmental problems.

On the second of my eight days of gratitude, I offer this thoughtful PERC video with philosopher David Schmidtz. I think Dave will make you thankful. For elephants, for sunsets, and for your safe and warm home with food on the table.

Eight Days of Gratitude: I'm First

My name is Gabe Castro and I am a first generation college student from Norwalk, CT. I am a senior at UCONN studying Secondary Education with a concentration in Mathematics.

I've decided during this week of gratitude to share eight points of light in what sometimes seems to be a dark and troubled world.

First up in the holiday mashup? I'm First, an online community celebrating first-generation college students. To learn about this organization's work supporting kids who want to become the first in their family to get a college education, check out this piece on Marketplace. Then hear from members of their community on their Stories page.

You are a brand. "Whether you know it or not. Whether you like it or not. A brand is not skin-deep... A brand has a heartbeat."

In his new book, Unlabel: Selling You Without Selling Out, Marc Eckō stresses the importance of authentic personal branding, which can foster creative and commercial growth.

Talking to Hip-Hop Wired, Eckō shared the secret of his success "I think ultimately, the that reason I succeeded, or have been successful, is that I understand that success is just the hangover of failure."
